Stellafane ATM: Fine Grinding

in the 2001-02 Stellafane Mirror Class. Fine grinding refines the basic shape you have ground into the surface of the glass with rough grinding. The sequence of ever finer grits that you use smoothes the rough surface that was made in rough grinding, and prepares you for polishing.

Mirror grinding and figuring consists of four major steps (plus aluminizing). Rough and Fine grinding use hard tools (glass, tile or metal) and harder then glass abrasive grit (Silicon Carbide or Aluminum Oxide). Polishing and Figuring use a soft pitch tool and ultra fine abrasive (Cerium Oxide or Rouge).

You can make the disk anytime after your finish with 120 grit, and since the disk can take a week to cure, you may want to do it before you are finished fine grinding. In both cases, you want the back to be flat, as the tool will often be on the bottom and needs to rest squarely on the grinding table.

2019-1-2  Bottom line first: with the help of excellent internet advice from Bartles, Waite, Lockwood, Dobson and the Stellafane ATM site, everything came out fine. It took 16 hours of grinding and 23 hours of polish and figuring to get a mirror that Foucault tested at around 1/8 wave error according to the Figure XP software I plugged the Foucault numbers into.

2020-4-25  The end result was a cracked mirror from the mirror sticking to the tool during fine grinding and driving it loose with a 4 X 4. The crack was around an 1" deep into the pyrex. I tried to finish the mirror but ended up with a severely turned edge due to not channeling the tool.
